New York port guide

The Port of New York and New Jersey is the largest port on the US East Coast and the country's second busiest gateway for loaded containers: 8,897,531 TEU (4,881,469 containers) in 2025. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey runs the marine terminals at Port Newark, Elizabeth, Howland Hook (Staten Island), Red Hook and Bayonne, which also handle large volumes of cars, bulk and cruise passengers.

Approach & pilotage

Pilotage for foreign-flag and registered vessels is provided by the Sandy Hook Pilots, boarding off Ambrose / Sandy Hook. Vessel Traffic Service New York (US Coast Guard) manages traffic in the harbour.

Restrictions

Main channels deepened to 50 ft (about 15.2 m) by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Bayonne Bridge over the Kill Van Kull was raised in 2017 to 215 ft (65.5 m) above mean high water, the same as the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, letting ships of about 18,000 TEU reach Port Newark, Elizabeth and Howland Hook.

For planning reference only (researched Oct 22, 2026). Always verify against official publications - Admiralty Sailing Directions, List of Radio Signals, local notices and the port authority - and your agent before arrival.
