SALMONBAY General / Bridges WASHINGTON – LAKE WASHINGTON SHIP CANAL – SHILSHOLE BAY – Bridge notice (Revised) Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) will be performing heavy rail maintenance/construction on the Salmon Bay Railroad Bridge (BRDG UID 31177) (AKA BNSF Bridge 6.3), mile 0.1, across the Lake Washington Ship Canal in Seattle, Washington. The construction work requires the draw of the subject bridge to be closed from 02 November 2026 to 25 November 2026. This draw closure corresponds with the USACE’s large Hiram M. Chittenden Lock closure. The Coast Guard has approved a temporary deviation to the operating schedule that governs the Salmon Bay Railroad Bridge from 0600 on 02 November 2026 to 1600 on 25 November 2026. The draw will be able to open from 8 A.M. to 8 P.M on 14 - 18 November 2026, if a 24-hour notice is given to the bridge operator. The subject bridge provides 43 feet of vertical clearance in the closed-to-navigation position at mean higher high water. Vessels which do not require a bridge opening may continue to transit beneath the bridge during this closure period. This construction requires barges in the navigation channel during the same time as USACE’s annual lock closure and maintenance to minimize impacts. A crane and material barge will be positioned in the water to service the work of erecting temporary trusses that are required to execute the counterweight change out. During this timeframe, access on the southern channel to the small locks will be in operation during the large lock closure. A construction zone will be established for mariners to navigate around at minimum safe speed. The subject bridge will not be able to open for emergencies, and there is no immediate alternate route for vessels to pass. For more information on this draw bridge closure contact Travis Woodley at [email protected] or (682) 978-3311. Position 47-40.02N 122-24.13W USCG Northwest District Local Notice to Mariners 44/2026
