General / Bridges / Removal
General/Bridges From: Tentative 2026-09-01 through 2026-12-28 (to start) To: Project will take approximately 8 weeks Location: 40-45.21N 074-05.73W Bridge Name: Amtrak Portal Bridge This is a preliminary notice. STJV is tentatively scheduled to start demolition of the existing Portal North bridge as early as September 1, 2026, but could start as late as end of December 28, 2026. The actual start date will be provided in future updates and is dependent on moving remaining existing rail traffic onto the new bridge. Upon making the rail traffic switch, the power to the swing bridge will be cut, making the existing bridge inoperable and commencing demolition activities. The demolition of the existing bridge will require eight (8) continuous weeks of full channel closures (Both Channels) for the safety of the public and for the successful completion of the work. The bridge demolition will NOT use explosives, instead sections of steel well be cut and removed with a crane on a barge. Once the steel beams are removed, cofferdams will be installed, the concrete piers will be demolished along with the timber fendering. Mariners are advised to plan accordingly and exercise caution when transiting the area.
