MOBILE BAR - MOBILE CHANNEL General / LAA / RNA / Safety Zone Mobile Channel - Mobile River - Dead Ship Movement - Safety Zone --- On: 2026-11-09 --- The Coast Guard will enforce a 100 yard moving Safety Zone around the S.S. UNITED STATES and all vessels officially involved in the dead ship tow of the vessel into the Gulf of America. The Safety Zone will take effect upon the vessel’s departure from Modern American Recycling Services of Alabama (M.A.R.R.S.) Pier 4 on the Mobile River. No person may enter or remain in the Safety Zone unless authorized by the COTP or a designated representative. To seek permission to enter, mariners must contact the COTP or the COTP’s representative on VHF-FM Channel 16 during the enforcement period. Those in the zone must comply with all lawful orders or directions given to them by the COTP or the COTP’s designated representative. Once the S.S. UNITED STATES arrives at the sinking location in the Gulf of America, vessels that are not part of the operation should remain at least one nautical mile from the S.S. UNITED STATES until the sinking is complete. This stand-off distance is necessary to ensure the safety of workers onboard the S.S. UNITED STATES, and to protect the public from hazards associated with the sinking of a large vessel. Unauthorized vessels approaching too close to the S.S. UNITED STATES at the sinking location may be boarded by USCG law enforcement personnel, and vessel operators may be subject to civil penalties or other enforcement action. Concerned parties should contact the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Mobile Command Center at (251) 266-5888 or on VHF-FM Channel 16. USCG Heartland (Gulf) District Local Notice to Mariners 44/2026
