GALVESTON BAY ENTRANCE CHANNEL - HOUSTON SHIP CHANNEL
General / Bridges / Construction
Houston Ship Channel - Bridge Construction --- To: June 2027 --- The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) and a contractor are conducting over-the-water construction of the new Beltway 8 (Sam Houston Tollway Ship Channel Bridge) over the Houston Ship Channel. Overhead construction on areas outside the navigable channel are in progress. The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port Houston-Galveston has established Safety Zones for the waters outside the federal channel surrounding the existing pillars. Vessels transiting this area are directed to utilize the marked federal channel and should remain clear of transiting beneath the overhead work. Channel closures to support work over the federal channel are expected to commence near the end of December 2026. Overnight closures, likely in the 8 to 10 hour range, every other night for a week will be needed. Following a round of overnight closures, the U.S. Coast Guard VTS will schedule 2-3 hour blocks of no traffic in daylight hours to allow for deck placement. A pattern of these closures are expected to continue for 4-5 months. Additional planning meetings focused on minimizing disruptions will be held with Port Partners as the closure dates approach. Mariners are urged to transit this area with extreme caution and check updated notices regarding closures prior to transiting the area.
